Viewing Technical Papers on the 2005 Seattle CD
For several years, SAMPE and their vendors have been using Adobe Acrobat to create PDFs of the technical papers. Unknown to most of us, Adobe Acrobat Reader version 6 does not work well when running from a CD. Consequently, some SAMPE members and customers have had difficulty in opening the technical papers on the 2005 Seattle CD.

How to adjust your settings if you can't view PDFs in a separate window

Adobe Acrobat Reader 6.0 was included in the 2005 Seattle Technical Conference CD to allow users the opportunity to view papers without having Acrobat Reader 6.0 previously loaded or installed. Due to software difficulties or inefficiencies, the software on the CD may be causing a conflict with other versions of the same software or default browser settings.

If you are experiencing problems and follow the resolution steps below, you will not have to repeat these steps unless you change your settings in the future.

Symptoms

Acrobat Reader opens up a separate window (internet browser) to view linked documents. If you are experiencing any of the problems below or your internet browser default is AOL, please read the next section.

  1. Document is not visible in window.
  2. Adobe Reader Plug-in not available.
  3. Adobe Reader opens new window and the document is not visible.

Cause

  1. Acrobat Reader 6.0 which is included on the CD is conflicting with other pre-installed versions of Acrobat Reader.
  2. Adobe ActiveX controls are not set to view PDFs in browser.

Resolution

Step 5.  Choose File/Open and browse to the CD drive and choose Seattle37thISTC.pdf.

If you are still experiencing problems due to ActiveX controls, please allow Adobe ActiveX content to be viewed when prompted for this trusted application only.
